Blog Tour: Fury of the Storm Wizard by Shauna Black

Book Description:

A Storm is Brewing

In Silver Valley, an unusual string of mining accidents has locals whispering of dark magic. When the marshal sent to investigate goes missing, his young assistant Boone turns to Jesse and Eliza for help. But Jesse is a new mage with raw magic, and Eliza is hiding a secret. The three must learn to trust each other before the valley is destroyed and they are ripped away from everything they hold dear.

Book Review:

While the book starts out a little slow and confusing, it definitely picks up and gives you lovely characters that you can't help but cheer for. Boone, a shape changing dragon, is fun and loveable. I really loved his appetite and penchant for ice cream! My heart went out to Jesse for all he lost and struggled with, but I appreciated how he kept trying to make friends and didn't just give up and say, "My life stinks and I'm not going to do anything about it." I have mixed feelings about Eliza and her brother that will probably get sorted out in the next book.

Speaking of the next book, The Fury of the Storm Wizard, was not a cliff hanger ending, which I appreciated. While a second book would clear a few things up, it's not like everything hangs on writing another one either.

If your middle grader has any interest in the Old West, or in Fantasy, point them in the direction of this book.

Content is clean. No language, or sex, or graphic violence. There are scenes of being chased by mythological creatures and guns are used, but nothing gory or bloody.

About the Author:

Shauna E. Black fell in love at an early age. Her first romances resided on the shelves of the mystery section in the library. She went through The Boxcar Children, Nancy Drew, and Sherlock Holmes before someone introduced her to The Chronicles of Prydain. This sparked an enduring love for wizards, dragons, magic, and all things fantasy that Shauna still enjoys today. She always has her head in the clouds and her nose in a book.

Naturally, her love for reading evolved into a desire to create, and she became a writer. When she was a young teen, her English teacher made the mistake of offering extra credit for original short stories, and was suddenly swamped with Shauna's writing. Dutifully reading each story (at least, she wrote encouraging things in the margins), this teacher inspired Shauna to follow her dreams, leaving her with a warm spot in her heart for all English teachers.

Today, Shauna still keeps a box in the attic full of her early manuscripts, most written in pencil on lined paper. She lives in the high desert of the southwest with the other loves of her life: her husband and four children. She likes to drag them along on springtime hiking adventures to the many Anasazi ruins near her home, where she finds inspiration for her writing. She also likes to bake bread, do anything artsy, and travel to exotic locations to collect wind chimes.

Blog Tour: Immersed by Jennifer Griffith (Ripple Effect #6)

Immersed tour

Immersed by Jennifer Griffith

Book Description:

Lisette Pannebaker speaks five languages and has a brilliant business plan—personal language immersion. Clients can hire her to shadow them and speak all day in any language they need to learn for business or travel—whatever. But there’s a major hitch: she’s far too pretty. Clients with less than honorable intentions sign up just have Lisette at their side. Solution? A make-under. Way under. It works like a charm. None of her male clients show her the least bit of interest. Until… Erik. Erik Gunnarsson is charming, kind, and smart—everything she’s ever looked for. Even though he seems to have a secret and she swore she'd never date a client, Lisette is tempted to shed her disguise—even if it means jeopardizing her career.

Andrea's Review:

Immersed was a great addition to the Ripple Effect collection. It was fun picturing Lisette's make-under, and although not very realistic (with the insanely good looking people and the wealth), it was a fun Cinderella-type story.

This was the first book I've read by Jennifer Griffith, and I would definitely read more of her work. Her story was creative and her characters were likeable. And, it was a fun and clean read.
About the Author:

unnamedFDRE9K6NJennifer Griffith studied French, German, Japanese, and a wee bit of Spanish in her school days. Her grandmother was Norwegian, and Jennifer grew up with lots of Scandinavian traditions floating around, including fabulous cardamom laced cookies called Krumkaker, made on a fancy waffle iron. However, she’d never dream of trying to teach someone any of those languages. And she might botch the cookies. Instead, she writes novels in English, drives her five kids a million places, and laughs with her husband, who came up with the plot for Immersed because he’s just a cool muse like that.

Book Review: Once Upon a Prince by Rachel Hauck

Book Description:

Once Upon a Prince, the first novel in the Royal Wedding series by bestselling author Rachel Hauck, treats you to a modern-day fairy tale.

Susanna Truitt never dreamed of a great romance or being treated like a princess---just to marry the man she has loved for twelve years. But life isn't going according to plan. When her high-school-sweetheart-turned-Marine-officer breaks up instead of proposing, Susanna scrambles to rebuild her life.

The last thing Prince Nathaniel expects to find on his American holiday to St. Simon's Island is the queen of his heart. A prince has duties, and his family's tense political situation has chosen his bride for him. When Prince Nathaniel comes to Susanna's aid under the fabled Lover's Oak, he is blindsided by love.

Their lives are worlds apart. He's a royal prince. She's a ordinary girl. But everything changes when Susanna receives an invitation to Nathaniel's coronation. It's the ultimate choice. His kingdom or her heart? God's will or their own?

Book Review:

I really wanted to like this book more than I did. But I can't tell exactly why it didn't speak to me. It had a cute story line, pretty good characters, it was clean, if a bit preachy, but something didn't sit right. All the other reviews I've read said it was great writing. I felt it was choppy or disjointed somehow, but since I'm not a writer and have no talent in that area I'll be the first to admit I could be wrong there. It captured my attention enough to finish it and read the second book in the series, but it was a book I could set down and not really think about until I picked it up again. In fact, if I hadn't been on a plane for 22 hours I might not have finished it as quickly as I did.

Since I can't pinpoint what I didn't love about the book I can't write a more in-depth review.  Once Upon a Prince had a cute story line and was clean, and that's about it.

Before the Clock Strikes Thirty by Aubrey Mace

Before_clock_strikes_thirty
Book Description:

With wedding festivities swirling around her, the bride's fortune-telling aunt transfixes young Shannon Fielding. The gypsy woman foresees love in the girl's future: before her thirtieth year, Shannon will meet the man of her dreams. The promise of romance is absolutely thrilling it's almost enough to compensate for the groom's annoying younger brother . . .

Shannon has remembered, and loathed, Nathan since their childhood meeting at the wedding reception that set her on a never-ending quest to find her Mr. Right. When Nathan steps back into Shannon's life, she is forced to reconcile her memory of the obnoxious boy he once was with the endearing man he's become. Nathan quickly becomes the best friend a girl could ask for but when their friendship threatens to develop into something more, can Shannon give up the idea of the mysterious soul mate she's sought for so long?

Tarah's Review:

This was a fun book. Light-hearted, maybe a little cheesy, and totally predictable, but so cute that I didn't want to put it down. For some reason the "falling in love with your best friend" books make my heart happy.

The dialog was fun, the situations were hilarious, and the feelings were real. Although, I can't imagine ever being in Shannon's situation or shoes, and sometimes I thought, "Really? You don't see this?' I did remind myself that I am incredibly naive and I probably would have thought the same thing, even if it was obvious. :)

Nathan is a great character. Fun and sweet and just...well, great. Shannon is quirky and fun. The supporting characters don't detract from the story at all and I was wishing some of them would get together.  Oooo, maybe Aubrey will write another story about Henry and Rachel.

I would definitely read this again (it doesn't take long) and content wise it is squeaky clean. Just a couple of kisses.

Andrea's Review:

Before the Clock Strikes Thirty was just the lighthearted book I needed. It was a cute and funny story, and I loved the interaction between the main characters.

Like Tarah mentioned, Shannon seemed really oblivious at times, but instead of being bothered by it, it caused me to do a little self-reflection.

I thought the fortune idea made for a fun and entertaining story. It was predictable, but at the same time a few things were thrown in that made you wonder if Shannon was going to blow it or not.

This is a quick and clean read. If you are looking for some light, chick-lit, don't miss Before the Clock Strikes Thirty.

Blog Tour: Discover America: From Sea to Shining Sea

Discover America: From Sea to Shining Sea
Illustrations by Julie Olson
Lyrics by Katharine Lee Bates

Book Description:

Follow the patriotic journey of a little red balloon as it makes its way from the West Coast to the East Coast of the United States.

Accompanied by the words of one of America’s most beloved anthems America the Beautiful, From Sea to Shining Sea shows the diversity and beauty of our great country through the eyes of our nation’s children. To add an interactive experience, kids all across the United States will be able to go online to send their own balloons on their own journey.

Review:

I recently read this with my first grader. While it doesn't take long to read the words to the poem "America the Beautiful", a young reader can extend his practice time and get a bit of a challenge by reading the book description and author and illustrator info on the jacket.

The illustrations were a fun depiction of different parts of the United States, and we enjoyed the interactive option found on the website (learning about various states and even sending a balloon to a cousin). I can see this as a good, educational option to keep on hand during summer break.

About the Illustrator:

Julie Olson was born in the East, grew up in the Midwest, and now lives in the West. She developed a deep love for all parts of America as she lived in and traveled through various places. Since graduating with a BFA degree in illustration from Brigham Young University, she strives through her work to uplift and encourage others to be better.

Book Review: Tide and Tempest by Elizabeth Ludwig

Tide and Tempest (Edge of Freedom, #3)

Book Description:

Two years ago, her fiance perished during their voyage to America.

Now she discovers it may have been murder...

Dreaming of a better life, Tillie McGrath leaves Ireland behind and, with her beloved fiance by her side, sets sail for America. But when illness robs her of the man she holds dear, she's left alone with only a handful of tattered memories. While forging on proves difficult, Tillie soon finds some new friends at her New York boardinghouse, and begins pursuing a new dream--to open a home for orphaned children.

Despite two years passing, Captain Keondric Morgan has never forgotten the lass who left his ship so heartbroken. When a crewman's deathbed confession reveals her fiance's demise was the result of murder, the captain knows he must try to contact her. But his attention draws the notice of others as well--dangerous men who believe Tillie has in her possession something that could expose their crimes. And to their way of thinking, the best way to prevent such an outcome is to seize the evidence and then hand Tillie the same fate as her naïve fiance.

Book Review:

I just found out that this was the third book in a series. But the good news is that I read the whole thing and it didn't occur to me that I was missing anything :)

It wasn't my favorite novel ever, but it was well written and pretty good at the suspense part. Captain Morgan is a great character, if a little too noble. Cass, his brother is fun too. Tillie I could take or leave. I guess my biggest issue was the love triangle. I really have problems with love triangles. I also had problems with Captain Morgan's age. Not a big one, but I normally like my leading men to be around the same age as the leading lady.

I don't feel like I wasted my time reading this book. It was entertaining and kept me reading till the end. It just wasn't a book I would pick up again.

Blog Tour: Marriage Isn't For You by Seth Adam Smith

Marriage Isn't For You: It's for the One You Love by Seth Adam Smith

Book Description:

For author Seth Adam Smith, it was the advice from his father, who said, "Marriage isn't for you. It's about the person you marry." These few words completely change the way Seth looked at his relationship with his wife. His thoughts on the subject became an online phenomenon. Paired with beautiful images, they are now available as a book—the perfect gift for newlyweds, those who are celebrating an anniversary, or anyone who wants to learn how to make a relationship stronger.

Review:

I remember when this blog post came out on facebook. When I read it then it was powerful. Reading it again, this time with beautiful pictures to go along with it really makes you think.
"Marriage isn't for you. It's not about you. Marriage is about the person you marry." Isn't that great? Doesn't it change things? It definitely made me think twice about how I perceive my relationship with my spouse. Looking back I can notice patterns between the good times and the rough times. The focus on me or my spouse was different during those times. Isn't it crazy that it's that simple? For a selfish person like myself it is harder to implement that change, but it is great to have reminders like this to help me get back on track.

About the Author:

Book Blast: Missing Lily by Annette K. Larsen

missing lily

Missing Lily

“You don’t know who I am,” I whispered. He didn’t move—either away from me, or closer—and after an interminable moment, I stepped back and hurried out of the house. He didn’t follow me as I fled into the night.

Lylin was not used to being alone—much less alone, hurt, and lost. So when she is separated from her guard and forced to abandon her horse, she counts herself lucky to stumble upon a manor house. Still frightened by those who chased her into the night, she keeps her identity a secret, calling herself Lily as she accepts the help of kind servants, and the compassion of Lord Fallon. When they fall into an easy friendship, she wonders if her secrecy was too hasty. However, as she gets to know the manor and its residents, Lylin discovers that she’s not the only one hiding secrets, and it may be a very good thing that her host doesn’t know her true identity as a member of the royal family.

Author Annette K. Larsen I was born in Utah, part of a crazy, fun family of nine. I grew up in Flagstaff, AZ and St. Louis, MO before striking out on my own college adventure in Virginia. I decided to try my hand at writing novels after I was married and living in Idaho. I write clean romance because it’s my favorite genre, but often difficult to find.

I have Charlotte Brontë to thank for the courage to write novels. After being bombarded with assigned reading about women who justified abandoning either their families or their principles in the name of love, I had the great fortune of reading Jane Eyre. And that was it: finally, a heroine who understood that being moral and making the right choice was hard, and sometimes it hurt, but it was still worth it. After rereading it several years later, I realized that if I wanted more books to exist with the kinds of heroines I admired, then I might as well write a few myself. My books are about women who face hard choices, who face pain and rejection and often have to face the reality of sacrificing what they want for what is right. The consequences are often difficult or unpleasant, but in the end, doing what’s right will always be worth it. I believe there is no substitute for good writing or good chocolate. Fortunately, one often leads to the other.

Book Review: Plots and Pans by Kelly Eileen Hake

Plots and Pans
Book Description:

Order dictates Tucker Carmichael’s life— his orders. On a cattle drive, a moment’s hesitation can mean death. The Chisholm Trail is dirty, dangerous, and no place for women. After years at school, Jessalyn Culpepper has come home and is determined to show everyone that a woman can manage everything from cooking to cattle—whether they like it or not! Tucker tries to manage his partner’s headstrong sister, horrified when she wants to join the cattle drive. But when they need a chuck wagon cook, Jessalyn seems the only solution. Will God stir up love along a trail filled with their Plots and Pans?

Book Review:

What a fun book! Just what I needed right now. I loved the relationship between Tucker and Jess. There were times when I burst out laughing with something Tucker said or thought. He was so confident, but he just didn't get it. I enjoyed Jess's character and her fire and passion for the ranch and trying to fit in. I wish Ed had a little more to do with the story, especially at the end. Parts of the book seemed a little choppy, but the story was so good I didn't mind.

Blog Tour: Second Chances 101 by Donna K. Weaver (Ripple Effect #5)

second chances tour

Second Chances 101 by Donna K. Weaver

Book Description:

Thirty seven year old Francie Davis, a recent widow and empty nester, gets to attend college at last. She’s sure her luck has changed when she also lands a job on campus that will pay her tuition, as administrative assistant to a history professor. When her handsome new boss yells at her on the first day of work, Francie worries she will never be good enough.

For Professor Alex Diederik, life is going downhill fast. Not only is his bitter ex-wife trying to poison their only daughter against him, but now his one place of solace—his work environment—is being complicated by his attractive new administrative assistant. She drives home his feelings of failure as a husband and father, and Alex wonders if hiring her was the right thing to do. Francie will have to put aside her hurt and insecurities or risk her dreams, while Alex must look outside himself if he’s to mend the breach with his daughter. And, perhaps, find someone who can help heal his pain.

Andrea's Review:

I've enjoyed this Ripple Effect series so far, so I was looking forward to the fifth book, Second Chances 101 by Donna K. Weaver. While it wasn't my favorite of the series due to the heavier themes than the other books (sexual harassment and talk of infidelity), I did think that Donna's story was well-written and I was interested to see how things would turn out for Francie. She is a very likable main character, and there are times you really feel for her.

Tarah's Review:

I agree with Andrea on this one. This wasn't my favorite of the series and I'm assuming it was because it was heavier, and not as light as the others. I also think it is because I didn't really like Alex. I thought he was kind of mean and...bitter. I mean, he has reasons, but that's no fun to read about. I'll also admit I'm a name snob in books, and the name Francie brings to mind an older than 37-year-old. It wasn't a big deal, but since other little things bugged me, that did as all.

It was well written though-the story flowed well and wasn't choppy or confusing. It did keep me reading because I wanted to know how it would end, and I think that's always a good sign.

Book Review: Silenced by Dani Pettrey

Silenced (Alaskan Courage, #4)
 Book Description:

A relaxing day of rock climbing takes a disturbing turn when Kayden McKenna's route leads her face to face with a dead climber. Is it a terrible accident or something sinister? When the case is handed to the overburdened sheriff, he turns to Jake Westin. With Jake's past now revealed, he's ready to use his talent for investigation again--but he could never prepare for where the case will take him.

Kayden and Jake soon realize that the death was no accident. And worse, it seems the killer is on to them. When strange things begin happening in Yancey, Jake is terrified that once again his world may put someone he loves in danger. But the truth is far worse than he could ever imagine.

Book Review:

I've been looking forward to reading this book for a while now, and I think it's because I love getting to know all the characters in the series. Someone in another review compared this family to Dee Henderson's O' Malleys family. If you like getting to know all the characters then Alaskan Courage would probably be a good series for you to try. I also was excited to read this book because I was intrigued by Jake. In all the books he was a background character never saying much, but always a strong presence. I'll admit that Kayden was never my favorite. I found her too abrasive for me, but I was excited for her story.
While the mystery was good and not completely obvious, I was a little disappointed by how many things I felt were left undone in this book. What happens with Kayden and the rock climbing group? What happens with Shane? There were a few more things too. It felt like the book was taking you one direction and then abruptly did an about face and took you somewhere else and left things hanging.
All that said and done, it didn't take me long to finish and I will be reading it again. I liked having closure for other characters with getting married, and I'm excited for Reef and Kirra's story.

Blog Tour: Prejudice Meets Pride by Rachael Anderson

Prejudice Meets Pride Tour Banner

Prejudice Meets Pride by Rachael Anderson

After years of pinching pennies and struggling to get through art school, Emma Makie’s hard work finally pays off with the offer of a dream job. But when tragedy strikes, she has no choice but to make a cross-country move to Colorado Springs to take temporary custody of her two nieces. She has no money, no job prospects, and no idea how to be a mother to two little girls, but she isn’t about to let that stop her. Nor is she about to accept the help of Kevin Grantham, her handsome new neighbor, who seems to think she’s incapable of doing anything on her own.

Fun, compelling, and romantic, Prejudice Meets Pride is the story of a guy who thinks he has it all figured out and a girl who isn't afraid to show him that he doesn't. It’s about learning what it means to trust, figuring out how to give and to take, and realizing that not everyone gets to pick the person they fall in love with. Sometimes, love picks them.

Tarah's Review:

Have I mentioned before how much I like Rachael Anderson's books? Yes? I know I sound like a broken record but she hasn't disappointed me yet. I especially liked this one because I was expecting a retelling of Pride and Prejudice but that isn't what I got, and for that I was glad.

I think I was also expecting an LDS book, but it was just a great clean romance. I really appreciate that.

Both Kevin and Emma are great characters and easily relatable.  Even if you want to shake both of them sometimes :)

It was a cute well written story that just makes your heart happy.

Andrea's Review:

If you are ever looking for a fun, clean romance, be sure to check out Rachael Anderson's books. Prejudice Meets Pride is a sweet story and a quick read. The characters are great, and this is a perfect book when you are looking for a light, easy romance to read.

I wanted some more details at the end of the book, but that's where the series comes in. I'm excited to read more from where Prejudice Meets Pride left off.
