Book Blast: The Pursuit of Lady Harriett by Rachael Anderson

The Pursuit of Lady Harriett by Rachael Anderson

Book Description:

When wills clash and hearts collide, who will reign victorious?

Termed an Incomparable during her first London season, Lady Harriett Cavendish is beautiful, spirited, and confident, capturing the attention of a great many suitors. Unfortunately, they all failed to capture her attention, and she concluded the season as unattached as she’d begun it.

Only weeks prior to her second season, Harriett encounters Lieutenant Christopher Jamison while visiting Tanglewood Manor. Recently returned from war, the lieutenant is everything that Harriett's previous suitors were not. He’s arrogant, ungentlemanly, irritating, and challenges her at every opportunity. When he goes too far, Harriett decides that it’s time to turn the tables on him. But as she sets out to put the lieutenant in his place once and for all, she discovers there is more to him than meets the eye, and when it comes to matters of the heart, she has no control whatsoever.

Excerpt:

The corners of the man’s eyes crinkled in a mild show of amusement. “Lady Harriett, I presume?” Rather than look at her with appreciation as most men did, he appeared amused.

At her nod, he tucked his hands behind his back, remaining a few steps above her. “I am Lieutenant Christopher Jamison, an old friend of Jonathan’s.”

“I was expecting you days ago,” she answered. “Lord Jonathan charged me with the unhappy task of informing you he and his new bride are currently away on their wedding trip. He is sorry he cannot be here to meet with you and has asked that I relay his apologies.”

“May I inquire as to how long they will be away?” he asked.

No, you may not, she wanted to say. Her neck was beginning to ache from looking up at him, but she forced her gaze to remain steady. “They expected to be gone a fortnight, sir.”

“And they have been gone how long, exactly?”

She felt an unaccountable hesitancy to tell him. “A week.”

“Ah.” He sounded disappointed but seemed to take the news in stride, glancing at Charlie as though wondering whether he ought to retrieve his horse or not. Harriett prayed that he would.

When his gaze strayed back to her, he took the unwelcome, and ungentlemanly, liberty of perusing her figure. When his eyes met hers again, his lips twitched into a slight smile. “Forgive me, my lady, but you appear to have had a run-in with a mud puddle and lost.”

How kind of him to point that out. Harriett kept her hands at her side rather than attempt to brush the dirt from her face and pelisse yet again. The damage was done, and no amount of brushing or shaking would remove the muck. What she needed was a hot bath and a change of clothes.

“Actually, sir, I was merely an innocent bystander.”

“Indeed?”

She picked up her skirts and ascended the steps, stopping on the stair above him so that she was eye level with him. “Are you always such a reckless rider, sir? Do you not pay heed to your surroundings?”

“Of course I do.”

“If you had, you would have seen me standing at the side of the road and, I would hope, thought to slow your animal down so as to not splash mud all over my pelisse.”

Her chilly set down did not have the desired effect. He did not appear the least bit repentant. Rather, he looked ready to burst into laughter. “And your face, apparently.” He leaned forward and squinted. “If I’m not mistaken, there is a splash or two of mud on your bonnet as well.”

Harriett glared at him. “How observant you are, Lieutenant Jamison. One can only wonder why you didn’t put that skill to good use earlier. If you had, perhaps my pelisse, face, and bonnet would still be clean.”

“I am always observant, my lady,” he said. “But might I suggest that if you would like to be noticed at the side of the road, you should wear a color that does not blend so perfectly with your surroundings. That particular shade of green looks quite lovely on you, but only someone with the eyes of an eagle would have spotted you in front of a landscape of evergreens.”

Harriett opened her mouth to respond, but no words were forthcoming. The man did not even attempt to behave like a gentleman. How could he be so . . . so . . . “Have you no apology to offer, sir?” she finally spluttered.

“Oh, did I not apologize? Forgive me.”

“For what? Forgetting to apologize or for not doing so in the first place?”

Tarah's Review:

What a fun book! I've already recommended it to my nephew and he's already read it and finished it. I wasn't sure when I first started the book because I normally like to classify my characters and put them in neat tidy boxes. "I like you, I don't like you, etc." These four kids were just that. Kids. You couldn't put them in neat tidy boxes. They were just real and kids and somethings I liked about them, and somethings I didn't like about them. I was interested to find out what each participant had unique about them. I liked how they bonded together, and came to understand each others quirks and shortcomings, but were friends anyway.

I liked the mystery and the turns and about-faces. It kept me reading, and if your kid likes this kind of story, it will keep them turning the pages too. I'd recommend it to any of my friends that like middle grade fiction.

Rorie's Review:

As soon as I got this book in the mail, it disappeared into the hands of my 9-year-old and I didn't see it again for over a month. (I had to go dig it out of the depths of his room so I could read it!) He had it finished within a day or two, a sure sign that he really, really likes a book.  I wasn't sure how I would enjoy the book, simply because it's not what I typically read. I started it a little hesitantly, but it didn't take more than a few pages for me to become hooked. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect from this story, but I got way more than I bargained for! I laughed, I was on the edge of my seat, I didn't want it to end. This book might be marketed for middle graders, but this is a story that I think any age group would love. Now I just need to get the rest of the author's books and read those too...after I can get them away from my son, that is.

Braden's Review:

I like the World's Greatest Adventure machine. I like how it is very futuristic and has very futuristic technology. My favorite character was Cameron. I like how he is scared of rides like fast roller coasters like me and is very smart. My favorite part of the book is when they find out that it only lasted barely three minutes when it felt like four hours. Really want to know what happens next will the lawyer get the real Drive or did Terry make the mistake like they wanted him to. I really hope the author makes another book that tells me what happens next. I want to know I hope you make another book on this.

Romance Awareness Month Giveaway and Review: The Secret of the India Orchid by Nancy Campbell Allen

Reviews * Giveaway
It's National Relaxation Day, and we have a triple review and another Proper Romance Giveaway for you! What better way to celebrate than to curl up with an entertaining Proper Romance. Be swept away to new places and meet memorable characters all from the comfort of your own home. What’s your favorite way to relax?

Book Description:

Anthony Blake is in love with his best friend's sister, Sophia Elliot. But his plans to court her are put on hold when he is forced to resume his role as an undercover spy for the Crown. A secret document listing the names of the entire network of British spies-including his own-has been stolen. To protect Sophia, Anthony cuts off all ties to her and exchanges his life as an honorable earl for the facade of a flirtatious playboy.

Heartbroken and confused, Sophia travels to India, hoping to find healing in one of the most exotic regions of the British Empire. But the exotic land isn't as restful as she had hoped. Instead, she finds herself embroiled in a mystery of a missing sea captain, a possible murder, and a plot that could involve the prince of India. And when Anthony appears at the British Residency, asking questions and keeping his distance from her, she is stunned.

She still loves him, and, in her heart, she knows he loves her too. But how can she rebuild her relationship with him if he won't confide in her? Does she dare offer her heart to him a second time, or will their love be lost under the India sun?

Rorie's Review:

I know from history classes and reading how vast the British Empire was back in the day, but it still kind of amazes me how people just up and left England and traveled on a ship for months at a time to go live in a foreign land that they really didn't know much about..and then once they were there, they did whatever they could to make it seem like they were back in England. I enjoyed reading about the markets and especially the ruins. I'd love to explore places like that.

I quickly fell in love with little Charlie and his ayah.We get to know several other characters and some of them I would love to be friends with. Some of them just made me roll my eyes. :)

I felt for both Sophia and Anthony. He was unwillingly thrust into a situation where he had to sever ties with her, and not be able to tell her why. She was left heartbroken and confused. I did get a kick out of her way of "getting back" at him for the heartache he put her through.

The part about the royal funeral seemed like it didn't really have a purpose in the book. It didn't fit in the with the plot, and nothing good seemed to come of what the ladies did. I'm not sure why it was included in the story, other than maybe showing what used to be done back then.

Other than that part, I really enjoyed this story, and look forward to reading more from this author.

Andrea's Review:

The Indian setting in Nancy Campbell Allen's latest book was a nice addition for the Proper Romance Line. I really like the variety in these books.

I was intrigued right away by the story, and really liked the main characters, Sophia and Anthony. Two years seemed an excessive amount of time for Anthony to be searching for the document, but I suppose the time added a lot to the feelings our main characters had. The bad guy wasn't a total surprise, but I was kept guessing for a lot of the story. The ending was satisfying, albeit a bit busy with so many unlikely heroes stepping up.

If you are looking for a clean read, with action and a first love, second chances aspect, this could be the book for you.

Tarah's Review:

This is the second time I've read this, so I was entertained enough with the characters and the plot to read it again. I love that this took place away from England. I don't know anything about India, especially during that time period so I can't tell you if it was realistic or not, and honestly, since the British tried to make everything British there wasn't much to the setting being in India.

Since Anthony and Sophia already fell in love, this book isn't really, I felt, about their relationship. It's about making circumstances happen so they can get back together. I didn't have any problems with that. I didn't mind that their relationship was already established. It made sense in my brain and I ran with it.

It's a mind candy mystery. If you are looking for something deep you probably aren't going to get it. But if you are looking for a quick "proper romance" to escape into, this would do the trick.

Blog Tour: Havencross by Julie Daines

Reviews * Giveaway
Havencross by Julie Daines

Book Description:

When a shocking scandal involving her father spreads through London society, Elaine Cardinham and her parents are forced to retreat to their country home in Cornwall for refuge. But Havencross is no sanctuary for Elaine. She is haunted by the mysterious disappearance of her brother—and the heartbreak she left in her wake all those years ago. It has been five long years since Gareth Kemp last saw Elaine—when she rejected his marriage proposal. Her reappearance convinces him of one thing: he has never stopped loving her. To put his feelings for her aside, he focuses his attention on the dangerous smuggling plaguing the Cornish coast. As Elaine attempts to run from her past, she ventures ever closer to a dangerous truth—and Gareth may be the only one who can save her from a deadly finish.

Andrea's Review:

Havencross was a perfect summer read. I was initially drawn in by the cover (it would definitely catch my attention at a bookstore or library), but my attention was held by the details that unfolded about the past.

The story was fast paced and very intriguing. Elaine's family flees London in shame, and hopes they've gone far enough to avoid the scandal. But being back at Havencross has its own challenges.

I really liked Elaine. We don’t get to know her parents well, but what we learn isn’t very favorable. It seems that the heartbreaking loss of Elaine’s brother years before really changed the family dynamic. And then there’s the lack of communication that drags the family down.

Gareth was a great character. He and his family seemed so down to earth and pretty much the opposite of Elaine’s family.

This was a very enjoyable, clean story that I would read again.

Rorie's Review:

I absolutely loved Eleanor and the Iron King, so I was excited to review the newest book by Julie Daines.

Starting off, I am always amazed when I read about how much an entire family's social standing can be affected by one person's actions during this time period. I mean, maybe we do that to a small extent these days, but I don't think it's anything like it was back then. (At least I hope it isn't!)

This was a good book, but there wasn't anything that really jumped out at me as something that I loved. I was able to put this book down and not be anxious to get back to it and continue the story. That being said, I was completely surprised by who some of the bad guys turned out to be.

This was the second book in a few week's time that involved smuggling along the coast. I didn't realize how big of an issue it was back then. It was pretty interesting learning more about it from both stories.

While I didn't absolutely love this book, I still really enjoy this author's writing, and can't wait to read what she comes up with next.

Tarah's Review:

This book really hit the spot for me. I was thoroughly entertained the whole read, and will definitely be reading it again. I think it was probably because of the story. It was just a good story. The writing wasn't the best I have ever read, but the story makes up for anything that may be lacking.

I wasn't super surprised by the bad guy, but I loved the two main characters. Gareth is a keeper in my book :) I was surprised by the different mysteries that popped up, and I loved the mythological/supernatural (?) element to this book.

I'll be passing this book around to my reading friends, and I'll be reading it again pretty soon.

Romance Awareness Month Giveaway: Edenbrooke by Julianne Donaldson

It is National Book Lovers Day today, and I'm very excited to share my favorite Proper Romance with you, Edenbrooke by Julianne Donaldson.

Edenbrooke is the first book in the Proper Romance Line, and I'm re-reading it right now (for the fourth or fifth time). Here is my original review from just over five years ago:

What a fabulous book! Julianne Donaldson is definitely an author to keep your eye on. Her debut novel was so entertaining. I literally laughed out loud and cried. My heart even raced a time or two! It was such an enjoyable story.

I love novels with a strong female character who doesn't quite fit in with the time. Marianne longs for the opposite of everything proper ladies desire. She wants to run free in the countryside and twirl if the desire arises, not spend hours visiting stuffy ladies over tea. But, when her grandmother tells her she must become a proper lady in order to receive her inheritance, she decides she will make an effort (since she's certain no man would ever want to marry her).

Phillip was also wonderful. Yes, I doubted him a time or two, but when all was said and done, he was perfect.

The romance is excellent without crossing any lines. I loved Marianne's naivete-it made the small gestures (brushing of hands or a look) mean so much more. There was even some action (duel anyone?).

Donaldson really painted a picture with words. You see this right from the first page when you meet Mr. Whittle. The description of Mr. Whittle's "repulsive" mouth was so detailed it gave me the willies.

Your life probably won't be changed by reading this book. But, it will probably make you smile. And sometimes, don't we just need to smile?

A Name Unknown by Roseanna M. White

A Name Unknown (Shadows Over England #1)
Book Description:

Edwardian Romance and History Gains a Twist of Suspense

Rosemary Gresham has no family beyond the band of former urchins that helped her survive as a girl in the mean streets of London. Grown now, they concentrate on stealing high-value items and have learned how to blend into upper-class society. But when Rosemary must determine whether a certain wealthy gentleman is loyal to Britain or to Germany, she is in for the challenge of a lifetime. How does one steal a family's history, their very name?

Peter Holstein, given his family's German blood, writes his popular series of adventure novels under a pen name. With European politics boiling and his own neighbors suspicious of him, Peter debates whether it might be best to change his name for good. When Rosemary shows up at his door pretending to be a historian and offering to help him trace his family history, his question might be answered.

But as the two work together and Rosemary sees his gracious reaction to his neighbors' scornful attacks, she wonders if her assignment is going down the wrong path. Is it too late to help him prove that he's more than his name?

Tarah's Review:

It's been awhile since I've read a book that I've really really liked, and I've got to say, even though I haven't read all her books, A Name Unknown is my favorite book by this author. I can't wait till she writes the next in the series!

Peter is my favorite character is this novel. I love his quite unassuming kind nature. His stutter is endearing and his kindness is swoon-worthy.  I love how he writes under a different name. That was an interesting part of the book for me...to see how an author can tune everything out when they are on a roll.

Rosemary is just what Peter needs, and I love the interactions between the two of them. My favorite being when he shushes her and she gets back at him later :) Her family warms your heart, and her figuring out who she really wants to be is awesome.

The suspense is well written and the ending wasn't rushed. I really appreciate that. Like I said earlier, I can't wait for the other books to come out in the series.

Rorie's Review:

Peter completely won me over. He was strong, but at the same time, vulnerable. I liked him even before we really got to know him well. And the more we got to know him, the more I liked him. He was truly a good man, the kind we need a whole lot more of these days.

Rosemary may have been a thief, but we quickly saw that she was a good person too. Fiercely protective of her family, doing whatever she could to help them survive and stay safe.

The story drew me in almost immediately. I kept wishing I could put those necessary life chores on hold for a few days so I could just sit and read this book. As the unread pages in the book dwindled, and the story still had so much to be resolved, I began to worry that this would be a cliffhanger, where I'd have to wait way too long for my tastes to find out what happens with Peter and Rosemary. Thankfully, the author is not that cruel, and the story did have an ending. I'm looking forward to reading the other books in the series when they come out. I enjoyed the author's writing, and plan on finding her other books so I can read them too.
